Grant Writing and Review for Non-Dilutive Funding

Gareth Hughes

Gareth Hughes

I have been involved with medtech and biotech startups since 1994, beginning with my grad school days at the University of Minnesota. One of my primary startup roles was submitting grants to support early stage product development. As a result, I have significant experience in grant writing focused on medtech and biotech product development, particularly with SBIR and STTR applications.
I've been a Principal Investigator (PI), have helped bring in over $30 million in grants, and have been a grant reviewer. Most of the grants I've written have been for either NIH (National Institutes of Health), NSF (National Science Foundation) or DOD (Department of Defense).
Projects and technologies that I have worked on in the past include:
hyperspectral imaging for multiplexed tumor analysis
retinal scanning for diagnosing traumatic brain injury
peripheral nerve implants for advanced upper-limb prosthetics
microfluidic separation of proteins for downstream analysis
deep brain stimulation
vagus nerve stimulation
nanomanipulators for cell-based research
targeted hyperthermal cancer therapy
nanoparticle-based drug delivery
Much of my research has involved some combination of polymer chemistry, MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), optics, and nanotechnology, all geared towards medical applications. As a Biomedical Engineer, I also have a strong understanding and relevant experience regarding the life cycle of medical devices and novel drugs from lab-based research to pre-clinical studies (in vitro, in vivo) to clinical trials.
In 1998, I embarked on my own entrepreneurial path, becoming the first employee of a medtech startup developing retinal scanning technology based on micromirror technology. Since then, I have been involved with many medtech and biotech startups, either as a co-founder, advisor, or contractor/consultant. My startup experience is a benefit for crafting competitive business proposals such as SBIRs.
