Nothin’ Like the Wild West: Livestock and Agriculture

There’s nothing like waking up, stepping outside, and being consumed by the feeling that you’re actively living in (a somewhat more friendly and current version of) the Wild West!

I love the look of the various pieces of agriculture that we get to experience growing here in the PNW. We may live in a desert climate here in Eastern Washington, but we certainly aren’t lacking for food growth. One side of the county is littered with apple orchards, the other with pumpkins and corn stalks, with different bits of cattle grazing between the usable land.

Most cattle is sustained by local flora and a dry mix of alfalfa and grass hay in the form of “rolled up for transport, unrolled for munching, and digested into cow pies”, aka Hay Bails. These will sustain the cows for the cold seasons ideally, but they will also be forced into using them if the previous snowfall was too little or their grazing land had been burned through.

I’ve been so busy recently that I haven’t had the time that I normally do to set aside for some reading and writing of my own, but as our website gets in the swing of things and our kids get better assimilated with their active lives, we may come up with a publishing schedule to get more posts out.
