Open Residency

Designing a 10-Week Admission Ritual

A serialized community activation for a transnational vehicle registry. Over ten weeks, three hundred nominated vehicles, one hundred admitted citizens, and a final coronation — designed around ID systems, ritual vocabulary, ladder mechanics, and daily Story duels.

Client: THRILL Republica (in-house engagement, founder role) Year: 2025 Duration: 10 weeks across three structural phases Format: Serialized community activation, Instagram-led Audience: Vehicle owners, photographers, automotive cultural community Role: Concept, system design, visual identity, copy, daily execution

Layers designed — Nomination architecture, admission ritual, duel format, bracket mechanics, ID and Passport system, ambassador coronation, council program, journalist program, daily content templates, narrative voice.

Instead of building a campaign, I designed a sovereign state of belonging.
Open Residency uses the vocabulary of nationhood — citizens, residency, admission, ambassador, passport, diplomatic instrument — to wrap the activation in cultural gravity.
Vehicle owners aren't participants. They're nominees, admitted residents, and elected citizens progressing through a structured ladder of recognition.
This shift in framing changes what the audience is doing. Voting on Story polls becomes participating in elections. A digital badge becomes a citizenship credential. A prize becomes a diplomatic instrument awarded at coronation.
The mechanic is familiar; the framing is what makes it feel like a movement.

THE STRUCTURE

The campaign was built across three sequential phases, each with its own design language and tempo.

Phase 01 — Nominations (Weeks 1–3)

Three hundred vehicles selected by the studio or proposed by the community, each posted publicly as Nominated via Feed and Stories. Nominees opt in through THR ID registration using a referral code, becoming Admitted Residents and receiving a digital Resident Passport.
Target, and benchmark, was a hundred admissions by the close of phase one.

Phase 02 — Elections (Weeks 4–8)

One hundred admitted citizens entered fifty Duel Elections, two per weekday. Each duel ran as a 24-hour Instagram Story poll.
Winners earned Elected Citizen status and advanced toward the final tournament; runners-up retained Resident status and access to the broader registry.
Daily duels created a built-in attention loop. Every weekday, the community returned to vote, comment, and campaign for their candidates.

Phase 03 — Ambassador Coronation (Weeks 9–10)

The fifty elected citizens entered a second-round tournament — twenty-five duels narrowing to a final eight, semifinals, and a single coronation. A council of three to five external curators handled the first cut, with the framing "Council curates, community crowns."
The final coronation crowned the first Ambassador of THRILL Republica, recognized with a unique social badge, the Ambassador Edition Passport, and a heritage luxury fountain pen valued at €700 — presented as the Republica's Diplomatic Instrument.

THE VISUAL SYSTEM

Every recurring post format had a fixed visual identity. Consistency was non-negotiable — at 70 days of daily content, the system either held or collapsed.
Nomination carousels — Three-car covers with the Nominated stamp, individual vehicle pages inside, footer line driving registration through the referral code.
Admission visuals — Digital Resident Passport mockups with THR ID placeholder, Admitted badge, and citizen credential typography.
Duel cards — A vs. B split layouts, 24-hour poll prompts on Stories, timer reminder cards every three hours throughout the active voting window.
Bracket boards — Daily winner summary visuals at the close of each duel day, designed to be screenshotted and shared.
Coronation assets — Ambassador Edition Passport, badge variants, public coronation post.
The visual system was deliberately rigid: a small number of templates, repeated daily, with controlled variation. That repetition was the point. By week four, the community could recognize an Open Residency post in their feed without reading the caption.

WHAT IT PROVES

Most brand campaigns produce attention. This one produced a designed community structure — a ladder, a vocabulary, a visual system, a ritual cadence, and a population of admitted citizens identified by ID and badge.
Open Residency is the kind of work I describe as Community Architecture: invisible systems that turn an audience into a membership. Designed once, run as seasons, compounded over years.
Season Two is in development.
