Project Overview

Goodteer is a conceptual design created as a volunteer platform. This app was created as a project for a "social good". I decided to build off of an already developed social structure- Metro Regional Government in Portland, Oregon, as an abstraction to a potential application used in the community.

The Problem

The lack of a centralized platform to find volunteer opportunities in the community creates a barrier for individuals who wish to give back to their community but struggle to find meaningful ways to do so. Without an easy-to-use resource, potential volunteers may not be able to connect with organizations in need, resulting in missed opportunities for community engagement and impact.

The Solution

Goodteeer is a platform that provides a solution to the problem of finding volunteer opportunities in the community. With Goodteeer, users can easily search for volunteer opportunities in their local area based on their interests and skills. The platform allows non-profit organizations to post volunteer opportunities, and users can sign up for the opportunities that interest them. Provide a comprehensive solution to the problem of finding volunteer opportunities in the community. By incentivizing volunteering and building a community of volunteers, the platform helps users make a positive impact in their local area while also benefiting themselves and local businesses.

The Design Process

As the UX strategist for Goodteer, I began by validating the problem of the lack of a platform to easily find volunteer opportunities. Through user research, including user interviews, I gained insights into user personas, features, and user-flow ideas. To better understand the target users' perspectives on finding volunteer opportunities, I conducted user interviews as the research method, which revealed their philosophies, beliefs, expectations, and frustrations. From these interviews, I created representative user personas based on local participants.

User Personas

The Sarah persona most closely covered the demographic of people I interviewed and consolidated the most common scenarios I found when it came to volunteering.

Interview Research

I interviewed 14 participants from the Portland, Oregon area, and asked them about their volunteer experiences. Questions involved:
Past volunteer experiences, if any.
Various platforms they have used, apps they think could be beneficial.
Incentives for volunteering.
79% of participants said they found at least one of their volunteer experiences to be unorganized and/or difficult to find.
It was also concluded that people like to have options and incentives, most people would like yo have some sort of log of their past work, and they want to be able to connect with their community.

Empathy Mapping

Competitive Analysis

Goodteer offers unique features that set it apart from its competitors. Unlike other volunteer apps that only allow you to find volunteer opportunities, Goodteer provides a platform for volunteers to log their hours and track their progress towards their goals. Additionally, Goodteer has a messaging platform that allows volunteers to connect with other volunteers and share their experiences, making it a great tool for networking and building relationships. This sets it apart from its competitors, as it not only helps volunteers find opportunities but also supports them throughout their volunteer journey.

User Flow

When a user first opens the Goodteer app, they are presented with a login screen where they can either create a new account or log in with their existing credentials. Once logged in, the user is taken to the home screen where they can view their dashboard. From the dashboard, the user can browse and search for volunteer opportunities based on location, category, and time commitment. After selecting an opportunity, the user can view more details about the event and indicate their interest in volunteering. Once the user volunteers, they can log their hours and receive rewards. Goodteer also allows users to connect with other volunteers through a messaging platform to collaborate on future volunteer events. Goodteer aims to streamline the volunteer experience by making it easy to find and participate in volunteer opportunities while also fostering a sense of community among volunteers.

Information Architecture

The app should have clear and intuitive navigation, with all key features easily accessible from the home screen/menu. This may include a search function to find specific volunteer opportunities, as well as a messaging platform to connect with other volunteers and organizations. It should have a user profile section where users can create and manage their account, view their volunteering history and progress, and track their rewards and incentives. The app should also have a system for tracking volunteer hours and incentivizing users to continue volunteering, such as a point system or rewards program. Overall, the user information architecture for Goodteer should prioritize ease of use, clear communication, and incentivizing users to continue volunteering and making a positive impact in their communities.

High Fidelity Designs

I will only display the high-fidelity (hi-fi) designs that address the problems identified from the representative user personas, out of the 80+ designs created for this project.

Moving Forward

Moving forward, I plan to continue refining and iterating on the Goodteer platform based on user feedback and testing. I will be conducting further user testing to ensure that the platform is intuitive and user-friendly. I will also be reaching out to local businesses to gauge interest in an adaptation of the Goodteer design for their business.
I welcome any feedback from users and stakeholders as I strive to create a platform that meets the needs of both volunteers and organizations. I'm committed to creating a meaningful impact in my community by providing a platform that connects individuals to volunteer opportunities and allows them to make a difference.
