Alleviating complexities for immigrant youth

Linh Bui

Scope

- A PhD student and I conducted six co-design sessions with Vietnamese immigrant youth to understand how they assist their families with technology use in English-speaking environments. This project focused on one of the sessions, where we did a design critique of a U.S. government form explore possible ways to improve the navigability of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Results

- The session revealed a critical contradiction: students trusted technology to assist them but were skeptical of Google Translate’s accuracy in translating English to Vietnamese. This insight is crucial for future technology development to support immigrant youth.
- Based on the findings, we recommended new research directions, particularly enhancing the technical understanding of the FAFSA filing process to simplify and demystify it for immigrants.

Methodologies

- Co-design
- Design critique
