Satya Recs, an Art-First Site for a Lisbon Label

Satya Recs

Satya Recs is a Lisbon-based multidisciplinary label spanning cutting-edge electronic music, watercolour painting, landscape photography, short films and yogic teachings. That range is the design problem, five disciplines that would look like an identity crisis if the site tried to explain the connection, so it doesn't try. It opens on a full-bleed black-and-white film still and then stays out of the art's way: sparse navigation, image-grid galleries for the paintings and photography, a mix series, and vinyl and digital releases sold through Bandcamp rather than a store built in-house.
The restraint is the design. An art-first direction where the interface disappears, no hero copy explaining the label's philosophy, no scroll animations competing with the imagery, nothing asking for attention that the work needs. Everything commercial is pushed outward to Bandcamp and a separate US store, which keeps the main site a gallery rather than a shop. The video below shows the film hero settling into the gallery.

Vinyl Series

The label's physical output, given its own top-level section rather than filed under releases. Vinyl is the format this audience treats as an object rather than a file, so the layout is built around the artwork at scale, with the sleeve doing the work a product photo normally would. Purchases hand off to Bandcamp, where the buyer already has an account and the label already has a catalogue, so nothing is rebuilt just to keep people on the domain.

Digital Series

Three distinct strands under one heading, Dgtl for the core digital catalogue, Xplr for the more exploratory material, and Free Downloads for what the label gives away. Splitting them matters more than it looks, it lets one label release club-ready records, ambient experiments, and free material without any of the three diluting the others. The grid treatment stays identical across all three, so the difference reads as intent rather than tier.

Bandcamp

The commercial layer, kept deliberately off-site. Bandcamp already handles payment, streaming, download formats and the mailing list, and independent electronic buyers actively prefer it, so building a storefront to compete would have added friction and removed trust at the same time. Linking out is the stronger design decision, and it keeps the main site free to be a gallery instead of a checkout.

Merch

A separate US store on its own subdomain, which solves a practical problem rather than a design one. A Lisbon label shipping physical goods to American buyers runs into fulfilment and customs costs that make a single global store impractical, so the US operation lives independently and links in from the main navigation. Same brand, different logistics, invisible to the visitor.

Artists

The roster, presented with the same restraint as the rest of the site. Photography and name, no biography competing for attention with the work, because on a label site the release catalogue is the biography. It keeps the page scannable for anyone arriving from a single track and trying to work out what else the label carries.

About

The one page where the label explains itself, and the only place the five disciplines are named together as a single practice rather than a list. It carries the weight the rest of the site deliberately refuses to, which is why the homepage can open on an image and say nothing at all. Contact runs through a plain email address rather than a form, in keeping with a site that avoids anything resembling a funnel.

Music, painting, photography and film under one label. Full-bleed film still, image grids, and an interface that gets out of the way.
