Why AI-Written LinkedIn Posts Don't Get Engagement

Let me start with the embarrassing part, and why my AI-written LinkedIn posts kept falling flat.

A few months ago I wrote a LinkedIn post with AI, felt pretty good about it, and showed it to a friend. He read it for about five seconds and said, “this doesn’t feel like you wrote it.” I asked how he knew. He shrugged and said, “there’s no emotion in it. It reads like copy-paste.”

I brushed it off. Then it happened again, worse.

I sent a coach a free sample post, written the same polished, AI-assisted way. She replied almost instantly: “haha, even I could make this with ChatGPT.” That one stung. She wasn’t wrong.

It fills the gap with the only things it has: general advice, tidy three-part lists, smooth transitions, and a wise-sounding line at the end. It reads fine. That’s the problem. “Fine” is invisible. Nobody stops scrolling for fine.

Real writing has friction in it. A weird detail. An unfinished feeling. Something only a human who was actually there would include. That’s what makes someone stop and think, “wait, this is about me.”

The fix wasn’t a better AI tool. It was doing something before I wrote anything at all: observing.

After I got caught by that coach, I completely changed my process. Before writing a single word for someone, I now go through everything I can find, their profile, their recent posts, the exact words they use, the specific pain they keep coming back to. I collect real detail first. Then I write from that, not from a blank prompt.
