Overview:

The product:
Halmeoni’s Tteokbokki is a family owned Korean
restaurant that started out as street stall. With growing
popularity among foreigners in Seoul, South Korea,
Halmeoni’s restaurant strives to deliver homemade
Korean meals and side dishes. Her primary targets are
Non-Korean speaking International students, tourists
and workers who lack the time to explore native Korea.
Project duration:
December 2022 - January 2023
The problem:
Most Visitors/foreigners in South Korea cannot
order online because they do not speak
Korean fluently or even at all.
The goal:
Create an food delivery app that allows users
order in different worldwide languages.
My role:
UX designer designing an app for Halmeoni’s
Tteokbokki restaurant from conception to
delivery.
Responsibilities:
Conducting moderated interviews, paper and
digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity
prototyping using Figma, conducting Usability
Studies, accounting for accessibility, and
iterating on designs.

User research: Summary

I planned and conducted interviews and also, created empathy maps to understand the app users.I am designing for as well as their needs and wants. A primary user group identified through research was Africans who do not speak Hangul (Korean Language) at all. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about the user experience when ordering from Halmeoni’s, however, research also revealed that Language barrier was not the only problem they faced.
Problems included non-inclusion of popularly recognised signs and symbols, distance from the restaurant that limits in-store pickup as well as long wait times upon arrival to the restaurant.

Pain points:

Language barriers causing the food order process to be long and uncomfortable.
2-3 hour wait time as food is prepared ‘A La carte’ upon order placement.
No Online presence to allow for delivery options to Customers.
Payment options were restricted to only Cash as International card payments were unavailable.

Mockups:

Initial designs did allow the user some customisation, but after the usability studies, I added additional options to ‘switch to audio assist’. I also revised the design so users see all the customization options especially the create profile button when they pop up on the first screen.

Acessibility Considerations:

Provided access to users with Visual disabilities through the ‘switch to audio assist’ option as well text to images for screen readers.
Provided universally recognised icons to help make navigation easier to understand.
Actual imagery for meals and side dishes were used to help all users better understand their orders and what they would be receiving.

Takeaways:

Impact:
Users feel like Halmeoni’s Tteokbokki
restaurant really understands how they feel,
living a foreigners far away from home.
One quote from peer feedback:
“The app is so simple and easy to use. And the
images make me curious about Korean Cuisine!”
What I learned:
While designing the Zia’s Pizza app, I learned
that Designing is not just about colours and
shapes, the people you are designing for
always come first at every step!

Next Steps:

Plan and conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively resolved.
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
