Phillippa Lally is a researcher who studied how people form new habits. In a study she did in 2009, she wanted to see how long it takes for a new habit to become automatic.
She and her team looked at 96 people for 12 weeks. Each person picked one new thing they wanted to do regularly. They reported daily on whether they did it and how automatic it felt.
Some people picked easy habits like "drink a bottle of water with lunch." Others picked harder ones like "run for 15 minutes before dinner." After 12 weeks, the researchers checked the data to see when each person started forming their habit without thinking about it.
What results did they get? On average it took 66 days to form a new habit.
However, some people formed their habit in 18 days, while others took 254 days.
Also, it didn’t matter if they missed the opportunity to perform the behavior.
