Overview:

The merchandise app is a platform that allows users to purchase various types of merchandise online. The app provides a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories, electronics, home goods, and more. Users can browse products by category, search for specific items, and filter by price, brand, size, and other criteria.
The app offers a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to navigate and shop. Users can view high-quality product images, detailed product descriptions, and customer reviews before making a purchase. The app also provides secure payment options, such as credit card and PayPal, to ensure a safe and seamless checkout experience.
Merch Finder is a music merchandise app that allows customers to order music merchandise from home. This way if customers cannot attend concerts or go to stores due to schedule or inability they can acquire merchandise from the comfort of their living rooms.

The Goal:

Design an app that allows users to quickly and easily find what they want from a variety or music merchandise choices

My role:

UX and Graphic Designer designing a music merchandise app called Merch Finder from conception to delivery.

Responsibilities

Conducting interview, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.

User Research Summary:

I conducted usability studies, researched a competitive audit, created empathy maps and created personas. The main user group that was determined through my research were aged 16-65 and because of lack of time or inability could not attend concert or visit shops. The research confirmed original thoughts about intended customers but research also let us know that not only was time or inability a factor but also convenience, general interest, and gift giving we’re reasons that people wanted an app like this

User research pain points

Accessibility

Concerts, stores, and other apps may not have accessibility in mind. Users could be unable to attend concerts, see, or hear.

Interface

The interface of many apps was too busy for users to be able to comfortably use

Availability

Users sometimes have a hard time finding the merchandise they want.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype was much cleaner and refined with clear user flows for ordering merch. It met user needs for finding different types of merch and acquiring it.

Takeaways

1

Impact

The Merch Finder app meets users needs in finding the music merch they want. Quote: "Normally I just go to a bands website for this but having the ease of an app would be much appreciated"

2

What I learned

I learned just how much goes into designing an app like this. Each step is really important from research all the way to the final designs to make the app truly useful and accessible for users.

Next Steps

1

Conduct another round of usability studies to see what can be further improved.

I continued by creating low-fidelity wireframes and a clickable prototype that I used for usability testing. This helped me validate the user experience and ensure that the app met the user's needs and expectations.

2

Do further research on accessibility needs and see how I can continue to improve in that area.

3

Further refine my design based on the previous steps.

Pain Points

Difficulty finding products: With so many products available online, it can be overwhelming for users to find the right one that fits their needs, budget, and preferences.
Shipping and delivery issues: Users may experience delays, lost shipments, or other issues with the delivery of their merchandise, leading to a loss of trust in the app and frustration with the purchasing process.
Limited payment options: Users may prefer to pay for their merchandise using a specific payment method that isn't available in the app, leading to frustration and a lack of trust in the purchasing process.
Lack of customization options: Users may want to personalize their merchandise with custom designs or messages, but the app may not offer enough customization options or may charge high fees for customization.
