Velvet Paws — Product Packaging Design Case Study

Project Period: June–July 2026 Brand: Velvet Paws Industry: Pet Care / Cat Products Project Scope: Product packaging design, visual identity direction, packaging system, and supporting brand assets

Project Overview

Velvet Paws is a modern cat-care brand created for pet owners who want products that feel safe, premium, and thoughtfully designed. The goal was to create a packaging identity that could stand out on shelves and online while communicating warmth, quality, and a genuine love for cats.

The Challenge

The brand needed a distinctive visual direction that could move beyond the typical playful or overly cartoonish approach often seen in the pet-care market.
The packaging needed to:
Create stronger visual differentiation
Communicate a premium yet approachable personality
Build consistency across different product formats
Appeal to modern cat owners who care about both their pets and aesthetics

Discovery & Research

The design process began with research into the cat-care and pet-product market, focusing on:
Competitor Analysis Reviewed existing pet packaging to identify common visual patterns, color choices, typography, and opportunities for differentiation.
Audience Research Considered the expectations of modern cat owners who value quality, simplicity, trust, and products that fit naturally into their lifestyle.
Brand Positioning The visual direction positioned Velvet Paws as a brand that feels premium, caring, modern, and cat-friendly without becoming overly childish.

Design Strategy

Brand Personality

The identity was developed around four key traits:
Elegant. Caring. Playful. Trustworthy.
The objective was to make the brand feel sophisticated enough for premium retail while retaining the warmth and personality associated with cats.

Visual Direction

The packaging direction combined clean layouts, refined typography, soft visual elements, and cat-inspired details to create a recognizable shelf presence.
Moodboards explored premium pet-care packaging, contemporary lifestyle brands, feline-inspired forms, and warm, inviting visual references.

Creative Rationale

Rather than relying heavily on generic cat illustrations, the design focused on creating a distinctive brand world around Velvet Paws. Every element was considered as part of a scalable packaging system that could work across multiple products.
