A behind-the-scenes look at how I brought my merch ideas to life — from rough concepts to final designs that merge creativity, culture, and style.
The concept
Every great merch piece starts with a story. For this collection, I wanted the designs to feel more than decorative — they needed to express a mood and connect with the audience on a personal level. I explored themes around humour, gaming and pop culture, translating them into simple yet striking visuals that could live comfortably on different apparel.
Sketching & Ideation
I began with quick sketches to explore typography, visuals, and layout possibilities. Some ideas came from earlier doodles, others from spontaneous visual thoughts during brainstorming. From there, I narrowed down the strongest concepts — the ones that balanced clarity, meaning, and wearability.
Design Development
Once I locked down the direction, I refined the artwork digitally starting with refining the sketches on my phone using a mobile drawing app. Next I import it into Photoshop, using my skills as a graphic designer to focus on clean lines, balanced composition, and colour harmony, ensuring that each design worked well on multiple backgrounds and fabric colours.
I also tested how each piece looked across t-shirts, hoodies, and tote bags mockups to confirm adaptability and visual impact in print.
The Outcome
The final collection captures the spirit I envisioned — bold yet minimal, expressive yet easy to wear. Each design feels authentic, making the merch more than just apparel — it becomes an extension of the brand’s or artist’s identity.
