Car drivability has become a key factor in evaluating a car’s performance. As the final decision of
car purchase is usually made after a test drive, drivability directly affects a vehicle’s marketability
and competitiveness. Generally, a professional driver observes drivability manually during the
car's development by detecting jerks, for example, during a shift, and a drive rating in form of an
ATZ grade is assigned. This ranges from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (outstandingly satisfied).
The Transmission drivability toolbox (TDT) from IAV provides an objective drivability assessment.
It can automatically calculate the ATZ grade for different events, such as shifting gears, engaging,
or load changes for different signals, such as acceleration, velocity, engine rpm, and further
internal state signals. However, the TDT needs special hardware to collect all the necessary
signals. The question then arises if it is also possible to calculate the ATZ grade without any
special hardware but with merely a smartphone.
