Context and Problem Definition
As the sole UI/UX designer at Getactyv, I led the design aspects of the project, collaborating closely with developers to create an intuitive and friendly user experience. Additionally, I developed the brand's logo and established brand guidelines. The primary problem we aimed to solve was making personal fitness accessible for people who lack the time to go to the gym or the facilities to achieve their fitness goals.
Design Process and Challenges
Initially, we had a design system in place, but it failed to retain users. To address this, we created a new design system that included a refreshed color palette and fonts. Alongside this, I designed a new logo that aligned with the new theme.
User Engagement Issues and Solutions
One significant challenge was low user engagement. Users had to sign up to use the app, which deterred them from exploring its features. To tackle this, we:
Introduced a free workout routine so users could experience the app's capabilities without signing up.
Created a demo video showcasing how the app works and its benefits.
Launched a free one-month trial plan requiring users to provide their details, allowing them to assess the app's usefulness before committing to a paid plan.
User Feedback and Iteration
To understand our target audience better, I conducted usability tests with friends and gathered their feedback. Key issues identified included:
Difficulty in tracking users wearing traditional Indian attire (suits).
Requirement of approximately six feet of distance for full-body capture.
Inability to track movements in dim lighting.
Inconsistent rep counting during exercises.
Some users found the workouts too challenging.
To address these issues, we
Added instructions to guide users on the optimal environment for using the app.
Enhanced the body tracking algorithm to improve performance in dim lighting and with traditional Indian attire, in collaboration with developers.
Implemented a form to assess users' current fitness levels, allowing us to customize exercise routines to match their fitness capabilities.
Results and Impact
The changes we implemented resulted in significant improvements:
User Retention: The new design system, color palette, and fonts contributed to regaining user retention.
User Engagement: The free workout routine, demo video, and free trial plan increased user engagement and sign-ups.
User Experience: Enhancements in body tracking and customized exercise routines improved the overall user experience, making workouts more accessible and effective.
