Case Study: Implementing a CI/CD Pipeline for an Edtech Startup

Background

This project involves an Edtech startup struggling with a slow and manual development cycle, hindering its ability to deliver new features and updates consistently. Rapid innovation and deployment of new features are crucial for gaining a competitive edge, but their existing development process was cumbersome and inefficient.

Solution

To address these challenges, we decided to implement a CI/CD pipeline to automate the software development process. This involved selecting the appropriate tools, establishing standardized rules, and collaborating with the development team to devise the best branching strategy.
Thought Process and Implementation:
Branching Strategy:
Implemented a Feature-Based Branching Strategy, creating separate branches for different features, enhancements, or bug fixes.
Developers worked on feature branches and merged them back into the main branch upon completion.
Automated Testing:
Incorporated automated testing into the Continuous Integration (CI) stage, including unit tests, integration tests, and regression tests.
This early identification of application defects reduced the likelihood of bugs reaching production.
Code Quality:
Integrated SonarCloud into the CI stage to ensure the software was reliable, maintainable, and secure.
Automated Deployment:
Automated the deployment of applications using the CI/CD pipeline, enabling rapid shipping of new features.
Configured the pipeline to deploy applications to both staging and production environments.
CI/CD Tooling:
Jenkins Setup:
Used Jenkins for CI/CD, set up on AWS.
Provisioned two servers for the Jenkins master to improve availability, with a load balancer distributing traffic between the Jenkins masters.
Deployed slave nodes to power Jenkins agents, with both masters and slave nodes running Linux.
Provisioned Network File Storage for shared Jenkins home directory, plugins, and job configurations.
Managed artifacts using Artifactory, with necessary build tools and dependencies installed on agent nodes.
Monitoring and Logging:
Integrated Prometheus with Grafana into Jenkins for visibility into run jobs, Jenkins nodes, etc.
Set up health checks, infrastructure monitoring, and alerts for failed builds and security issues.
Implemented a backup and disaster recovery mechanism to schedule regular backups.
Documentation:
Provided comprehensive documentation for all processes and tooling to ensure maintainability and continuity.

Outcome

Enhanced Collaboration:
The CI/CD pipeline significantly improved collaboration among development team members. The feature-based branching strategy facilitated seamless teamwork and code integration.
Quality Code:
The integration of SonarCloud resulted in higher code quality, ensuring the delivery of reliable and maintainable software to customers.
Accelerated Deployment:
Automation of previously manual processes drastically reduced the time required to release new features or fix bugs. Deployments now take only a few minutes, ensuring rapid delivery and continuous improvement.

Lessons Learned

Tool Selection: Choosing Jenkins for CI/CD and integrating appropriate tools like SonarCloud and Prometheus with Grafana was crucial for meeting the project's objectives.
Branching Strategy: Implementing a feature-based branching strategy streamlined development and facilitated better collaboration and integration.
Automated Testing: Incorporating comprehensive automated testing into the CI stage is essential for early defect detection and maintaining code quality.
Monitoring and Backup: Ensuring robust monitoring and logging, along with a solid backup and disaster recovery plan, is vital for maintaining system health and reliability.
Documentation: Providing detailed documentation is key to ensuring maintainability and continuity, particularly in fast-paced development environments.
