Memory loss can be very devasting for the loved ones who are dealing with Alzheimer's disease. The memory loss starts slowly. One day my mom stopped calling me by my name, and I became a nice girl. It takes some getting used to when your mom no longer knows your name. My mom, I believe, knew who I was, but she could not tell me because of the effect of Alzheimer's disease. My mom's smile told me she knew who I was, making it all right for me.
Some tips for dealing with memory loss for a loved one would be to talk to them about things they know. Show them pictures to see how they react, but do not push. It all depends on the stage of Alzheimer's disease and how much a loved one can remember. You need to make peace with memory loss as being what will happen to your loved one and do not take it personally if they do not know who you are. You get over the pain if you find something positive to focus your mind on instead of what you see going on in front of you. It is not easy, do not get me wrong, but, in the end, I was happy that my mom was still with me, and I could talk to her even if she did not know me.
