CHALLENGE
A personal project exploring how design can reduce loneliness while motivating action to protect the oceans of New South Wales.
APPROACH
I developed Rippleffexs, a speculative organisation addressing marine pollution and loneliness. Research identified Manly Cove, Dee Why, and Watsons Bay as some of Sydney’s most polluted beaches, with Manly Cove averaging 4,051 microplastics per square metre, alongside a growing loneliness crisis affecting public health. In response, Rippleffexs hosts free creative, social, and environmental events for people aged 18+ across Sydney. I developed the brand identity and communication system, including A4 posters and social media content. Events include DJ-led beach clean-ups, eco-markets, outdoor ocean film screenings, and biomaterial workshops, designed to encourage social connection while promoting environmental action.
FINAL CONCEPT
The name Rippleffexs references the ripple effect, communicating how small actions can lead to wider, lasting change. The hand-drawn wordmark reflects this idea through fluid, organic forms inspired by ocean movement, giving the brand an approachable tone. Promotion is primarily through Instagram, supported by A4 posters placed in eco-conscious retail spaces and community noticeboards. The visual system uses a bold, high-contrast colour palette designed for visibility in public environments. Each poster promotes a specific DJ-led beach clean-up event, with hand-drawn elements that allude to marine forms such as coral and ripples, while also reflecting the movement of dancing to upbeat music. The repetitive small text includes marine pollution facts about Sydney, arranged to mimic waves. Overall, Rippleffexs gets people outdoors and to come together and help make a positive change to our oceans.
