Wellness: How Where People Live Affects Their Health

Raphael Taiwo

People live in different conditions worldwide, but individual location greatly impacts health and wellness in general. Health means the wellness of an individual physically and physiologically; on the other hand, wellness covers a broad spectrum of well-being, both in the physical and physiological parts of the person. This article will discuss the importance of wellness in society and how social practices shape people’s wellness ideas.
Wellness is important in any society as it defines people’s overall physical and physiological well-being. The Colorado State University (n.d.) identified eight dimensions of wellness: social, spiritual, environmental, cognitive, financial, emotional, occupational, and physical. These eight dimensions emphasize the importance of actively promoting general wellness in society.
Cognitive in the discussion of health and wellness helps human beings to become creative, generate new ideas, get involved in continuing education (because education is from cradle to the point of death), open to new experiences, develop new skills, techniques and abilities; cognitive can also be known as intellectual. Social factors in the context of health and wellness help people interact and relate with one another, for instance, friends, family, and society at large, be functional in the community, and respect yourself and others. Human health and wellness will also be influenced spiritually; the spiritual standard of the people you reside with or your society will determine how religious one will be, and how people in your society pray and meditate will also determine how you pray and meditate. Emotionally, in the discussion, health and wellness help humans identify their feelings, give them the ability to accept, express and manage feelings appropriately, and fit to change in circumstances like stress and depression, among others.
Health and wellness physically keep us fit to exercise our bodies, get enough sleep, get immunizations when needed, get proper medical checkups and know things dangerous to the body like smoking and using unprescribed drugs (drug abuse). Occupational health and wellness help humans identify their leisure time from work time, get engaged with rewarding work, and have the ability to resolve work issues and conflicts. Environmental health and wealth will help people admire and appreciate natural beauty, take measures against environmental hazards, protect themselves, and make their environment clean and good. Lastly, financial health and wellness will help to identify one’s financial capability, knowing how much you earn, the amount you have, how to prepare a budget and hold to it, living within your source and having financial targets.
Discipline of Study
As someone with a great interest in the information technology sector, wellness is critical to influencing positive behavior and motivating professionals in the industry. For instance, industrial training students become rich because when a new application is created, it will influence people’s lives socially. Examples include Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, among others. Therefore, the discipline of this course depicts that, as a person interested in information technology, this will enhance people’s social wellness.
Social Practices
Social practices such as work orientation, seminars, conferences and economic stratification can influence people’s behavior toward wellness. In the U.S., people are constantly reminded of their economic well-being because of the socioeconomic categorization of low-income, middle-income, and top-income earners. Some people will focus on their financial well-being to move from one socioeconomic category to another. Reeves and Busette (2018) cited that most people in the U.S. will define themselves as middle class, such as the lower middle class, middle class, and upper middle class. These categorizations bring everyone close to the middle class, symbolizing financial, social, and occupational wellness.
The economic system in the U.S., whereby the market defines quantity, supply, demand, and product price, has shaped people’s idea of wellness. In today’s world, luxury products have a high impact as they are seen as high-end, and people buy them to enhance their self-esteem. The value of self-esteem from buying luxury products can be linked to cognitive wellness. Hence, how economic returns are defined, accumulated, and distributed in the U.S. strongly impacts people’s cognitive wellness.
Conclusion
This analysis focused on wellness as it affects people in everyday life. The eight dimensions of wellness underscore the importance of actively promoting wellness in society. This helps people to gain financial, cognitive, social, and occupational wellness. People will be happy because of their physical and physiological well-being. Just as an academic who has a great interest in the information technology sector, if an industrial training (IT) student is not cognitively healthy or well, he/she won’t think of developing any new application or software. Socially, when one doesn’t interact with people, he/she cannot know people’s complaints/needs or preferences on whatever software or application he/she has developed, and the same thing goes for other dimensions.
