Spotlight | Emergency Lighting IoT Platform
Spotlight manufactures emergency luminaires. This project brings device monitoring, scheduled tests, battery status, fault tracking and operational history into a responsive web application.
The challenge The existing routine relied on manual tests, triggered through circuit breakers or device buttons, followed by manual record keeping. The software was designed to centralize monitoring and make testing and maintenance information easier to follow.
The solution Devices send information over LoRa to a concentrator, which communicates with the platform through an API. The application organizes device status, scheduled and discharge tests, battery information, faults, history and reports to support the operational team.
My role I was responsible for software architecture, backend APIs, PostgreSQL data modeling, the web application, infrastructure and deployment. I also worked with the client on requirements, test definitions, logical commands and the integration contract between the software and the devices.
Spotlight’s hardware team was responsible for the hardware changes and LoRa implementation. The work required close collaboration to align device behavior with the platform.
Engineering and user experience The software combines Java and Spring Boot in the backend, PostgreSQL for persistence and Next.js in the frontend, deployed on Ubuntu. Particular attention went to device onboarding, alert configuration and presenting monitoring data clearly for day-to-day use.
Delivery and evolution The first usable version was delivered in approximately seven months. The platform progressed to internal testing at Spotlight, with software and device integration continuing to evolve.
