The Problem

A B2B SaaS startup had built a product that solved a real problem. But nobody understood what it did. Their landing page conversion rate sat at 1.2%. Email open rates were below industry average. Ad spend was burning cash with a 0.4% CTR. The founding team were engineers who could explain the product in technical detail but couldn't translate that into language that made someone pull out their credit card.
They didn't need more features. They needed words that converted strangers into customers.

The Brief

Build a complete full-funnel copy system for launch: positioning, landing page, email sequences, ad copy, and sales enablement materials. Every word engineered to move a prospect one step closer to purchase.

The Process

Phase 1 — Positioning Foundation
Before writing a single line of copy, I spent 2 weeks on positioning. Interviewed 8 beta users, analyzed 5 direct competitors' messaging, and mapped the market's language patterns. Found the gap: every competitor positioned around features. Nobody owned the outcome.
Built a Positioning Canvas:
Category: Where the product lives in the buyer's mind
Differentiator: The one thing competitors can't claim
Value proposition: The outcome in one sentence a 12-year-old could understand
Proof architecture: The evidence stack that makes the claim believable
The positioning line that emerged: "Stop managing projects. Start finishing them." Six words that reframed the entire product from a tool into an outcome.
Phase 2 — Landing Page System
Wrote a conversion-optimized landing page using a 7-section architecture:
Hero: Outcome-first headline + subhead that handles the #1 objection
Problem agitation: 3 specific pain points pulled directly from user interviews
Solution bridge: How the product eliminates each pain point (feature → benefit → outcome chain)
Social proof block: Structured testimonials with specific metrics, not generic praise
How it works: 3-step simplification (complexity is conversion poison)
Objection handling: FAQ section engineered around the 5 most common sales objections
CTA architecture: Primary and secondary CTAs with different commitment levels
Every section had a single job. No section tried to do two things.
Phase 3 — Email Sequence Architecture
Built 3 email sequences totaling 21 emails:
Welcome sequence (7 emails): Onboarding new signups from stranger to activated user. Each email had one action, one insight, one reason to come back.
Nurture sequence (9 emails): For leads who signed up but didn't convert. Progressive value delivery with strategic case study placement.
Re-engagement sequence (5 emails): For churned trials. Pattern-interrupt subject lines, loss aversion framing, and a final "breakup email" that consistently outperformed every other email in the sequence.
Phase 4 — Ad Copy & Sales Enablement
Delivered:
36 ad variations across 3 platforms (Meta, LinkedIn, Google) with hook/body/CTA frameworks
A/B testing matrix with hypotheses for each variation
Sales one-pager for the BD team (the product explained in 60 seconds of reading)
Objection-handling scripts for sales calls (12 objections, each with a reframe + proof point)

The Impact

Landing page conversion rate jumped from 1.2% to 4.8% (4x improvement)
Email welcome sequence achieved a 52% open rate and 11% click-through rate
Ad CTR improved from 0.4% to 2.1% across platforms
The "breakup email" alone recovered 14% of churned trial users
CAC dropped 38% within the first quarter post-launch
The copy system became the foundation for all subsequent product launches

The Takeaway

Copy isn't decoration. It's the mechanism that turns attention into revenue. A full-funnel system means every touchpoint knows its job: the ad interrupts, the landing page convinces, the email nurtures, and the sales material closes. When every word has a function, conversion stops being a mystery and starts being engineering.
