I co-created and illustrated a thesis book with Justine Severino for our Master’s degree project. We choose the topic of how to teach sustainability to young children so we can create better patterns with the next generation.

Goal

To create an engaging and visually beautiful book about early childhood education and sustainability practices that would allow both authors to develop a design project with kindergarten children to create a more empathic generation for the future of our society.

Challenges

Finding the visual middle point between the formality of a thesis book and the creativity and playfulness of the topic at hand: kindergarten.
Combining both our design taste and our grey pages in one unified body of literature.

Visual design

Justine and I went back and forth about how to have a colorful thesis book that also was taken seriously. In the end, we decided to bring a more “corporate” drawing style with a limited pastel color palette and sober typography, paired with some bold elements like big titles and fun patterns.

Illustrations

Every drawing started with a sketch made in Photoshop, the drawings giving hints to the readers about what things were to come in the next chapter.

Final thoughts

The empathic generation was a passion project as much as a thesis one. It allowed Justine and me to finish polishing some ideas we had for our project in the ideation part, plus focus more on this generation that is not taken that much into account when we talk about sustainability and innovation.
