A real client project for a children's middle grade book aimed at ages 8–12.
The Rune-Tree is a fantasy story about a young adventurer who discovers a mysterious rune-carved tree that holds the key to unlocking ancient magic. As they journey deeper into the enchanted forest, they uncover hidden secrets, face dark forces, and must protect the runes from falling into the wrong hands.

The Design Challenge

Middle grade covers need to work harder than picture books. The audience is older, more discerning, and drawn to covers that feel cinematic and immersive. The challenge here was to capture that slightly darker, more dramatic tone while keeping it age-appropriate and visually compelling enough to stop a kid mid-browse.

The Approach

The design leans into the mystery and fantasy elements of the story. A darker color palette sets the mood without feeling overwhelming, and the composition draws the eye toward the rune-carved tree as the central focal point. The typography reflects the ancient, magical quality of the world — bold enough to read at thumbnail size, with a weight that signals this is a story with stakes.
This piece demonstrates range within the children's book niche, showing the contrast between warm, whimsical picture book work and the more dramatic, atmospheric tone that middle grade readers respond to.
