Comedic Monologue about Addiction: 1 Female

Anthony Ellison

Below is a short comedy script that I wrote for the stage. It was produced in Liverpool UK, Chicago IL, Austin TX, Athens OH, Muncie IN.
I was given the prompt to write a female comedy monologue about addiction, which is inherently challenging on the surface. Most writers will tip toe around the subject, or just blatantly make fun of addiction.
However, a more intimate way to start any project is to remember you're writing about 'a character', as opposed to 'writing about addiction'. I found the voice of Sue before I knew the story: An lonely, deadpan, British Electrician without many friends...but aggressively looking for friends.
Within this want, I was able to find the link to addiction. The reason she didn't have any friends was because she was an alcoholic.
Enjoy.
