When asked to implement sound design and mix a series of commercials for the one and only Pokémon brand I couldn’t have been more stoked. An iconic brand releasing a groundbreaking new game in a hallowed game space? Sign me up! And the spots themselves turned out to be so beautiful, playful, fun, weird, and ultimately incredibly engaging. Each spot created its own set of design problems and necessitated specific solutions related to the various Pokémon on the screen. How do we make the puppets communicate their intent? How do we motivate the on-screen antics without overdesigning and staying true to the legendary characters? How do we tell the story of these mini-dramas through sound? The solutions all ended up being incredibly fun and intuitive design choices that helped to bring together the vision of these awesome spots.
