Introduction

With over 2.7 million users worldwide, VisualCV is the leading web app for job seekers and freelancers to manage their career profiles. In the modern corporate environment job, seekers tend to apply for jobs with varying job titles and requirements, leading to multiple versions of their resume tailored to specific industries, job titles, and companies. VisualCV allows users to easily create, manage and share as many resumes and portfolios as they like. Users have access to analytics so they know when their resume is being reviewed and which resumes are working best. This gives them powerful insights and tools to find their next big job opportunity.

Problem

With over 60,000 new users joining per month, an ambitious product roadmap, and multiple platforms to manage (web, iOS, Android), VisualCV faced a lot major churn and engagement problems. This post we'll focus on the engagement piece. The problem was that users engagement significantly dropped once they had downloaded the resume. We had it easier to create more resumes, but not everyone needed more resumes.

Solution

With the problem statement drilled down, we started the huge task of understanding "why" behind users behaviour. While it may sound obvious that users left once they had built the resume, we wanted to dig deeper and segment users and find out what separates users who leave from those who stay engaged for months. We found that those users were sharing the online public visualCV url of their resume rather than downloading and sharing it via PDF, essentially using our service for an online profile or portfolio.
So our first question was do people even want another online website builder, when their are so many other players like wix, squarespace etc. in market. But again if you don’t have a product you would never know what people wanted.
So we built a very basic version just converting 1 pdf template to a basic HTML, CSS website and and shipped it on 1st December 2018. We emailed our existing users and found that 30% of the users who had built their resume using that template in the last 3 months signed up for the website within 2 weeks. We gave a large focus on “Help/Suggestions” in the App and by the end of two weeks - I had spoken to 100 users myself. We found out that users loved the simplicity of changing their resumes to websites within 1 click and we knew that we had found something to build here.

Result

30% of new users were interested in this new offering without any additional marketing spend. We found that users using websites were 4X more engaged per month than other users and tended to stay on longer.
