Project Overview
I worked on improving the onboarding experience for first-time users of a fintech app (Payday). The project stemmed from user feedback, which highlighted the need for better guidance during the onboarding process, especially for users less familiar with fintech apps.
Project Description
As a fintech user myself, I found the transition from creating my Paytag to verifying my account smooth. However, inspired by a conversation with my mentor, I set out to investigate how first-time users, particularly those unfamiliar with fintech, experience the app. To address this, I conducted usability testing with participants across different age groups.
My Approach
User Research and Testing:
I reached out to three users from varying age ranges who had participated in a previous usability test. Two users navigated the app with ease, while the third encountered difficulties and needed external help. This highlighted the gap in guidance for older or less tech-savvy users.
Problem Solving & Design:
To address this issue, I designed a solution introducing a legend on the homepage to explain key icons and interactions. This addition aimed to simplify the onboarding process and assist users in understanding the interface quickly.
Prototyping & Testing:
Using Figma, I created high-fidelity screens and prototypes of the new user interface. After several usability tests and iterations, I reached out to User C (who had earlier faced difficulties) to try the updated design. The results were positive, and additional testing with users in the same demographic confirmed the improvements.

Results
The redesign greatly improved the user experience for older users or those unfamiliar with fintech apps. The introduction of visual aids (like the legend) made the interface more intuitive, reducing the need for external assistance during onboarding.
This project highlights the importance of catering to diverse user groups in fintech. By focusing on clarity, simplicity, and user-centric design, fintech apps can create a smoother, more inclusive experience for everyone, regardless of their familiarity with digital platforms.
