Personal Finance, Built for the Way Africans Actually Bank
Monilens is an Android-first personal finance app designed to make money tracking easier for users who rely heavily on bank SMS and email transaction alerts.
Instead of asking users to connect their bank accounts or share banking credentials, Monilens is designed to turn transaction notifications into an organized view of their income, expenses, and financial activity.
The Challenge
Traditional personal finance apps often depend on direct bank integrations, which can be difficult to provide consistently across African banks.
I wanted to explore a more practical approach: using the transaction notifications users already receive from their banks to automatically build a clearer picture of their finances.
What I Built
I designed and developed the mobile experience with Flutter, focusing on an Android-first experience suited to the African market.
Key areas include:
• Automatic transaction detection from bank notifications
• Income and expense categorization
• Transaction history and financial summaries
• Privacy-focused architecture without requiring banking passwords
• Mobile-first financial insights
• Backend architecture designed around Supabase
• Secure authentication and cloud data management
Technical Stack
Flutter · Dart · Supabase · Clerk · Cloudflare R2
My Role
I handled the product development from concept and architecture through the mobile implementation, including the application structure, UI, authentication approach, data architecture, and transaction-processing workflow.
The project challenged me to think beyond simply building another expense tracker and instead design around the banking infrastructure and user behaviour common in African markets.
