SG Connect - Case Study

The idea

Energy is hard to design for because you can't see it. Solar production, battery charge, grid draw it's all just numbers unless you translate it into something. Most energy apps don't bother with the translation. They give you cards: kW here, % there, an arrow pointing up or down.
I wanted the app itself to do that translation, instead of leaving it to the user.
So the top main screen isn't a dashboard. It's a cut-away 3D render of the house, roof, solar panels, garage, the actual hardware (inverter, battery ) sitting where it would physically sit. The four core numbers (Solar, Home, Grid, Storage) connect down to the part of the house that produces them with a thin line. You don't read "Solar: 17.45 kW" and then work out what that means, the number is already sitting on the panels.

Motion does the explaining

The animation between solar, battery, home and grid isn't there to make the screen feel alive. It's there instead of a label. Solar flowing into the battery means "I'm storing surplus." Battery flowing into the house means "I'm running on stored energy right now." You don't need a legend for that you just watch it for two seconds.

Same system, different building

The house isn't fixed to residential. Switch the account to an industrial profile and it's the same layout, the same four metrics, the same connector-line logic just a commercial rooftop, rack-mounted batteries. Nothing about how you read the screen changes. Only the building does.
That's the actual product decision underneath this: one platform, personalized at registration based on what kind of energy system the user has. Not four separate apps skinned differently.

Why it works

None of this is about making the data look nicer. It's about not making the user read data at all, the house does the reading for them. The 3D render answers "where is my energy coming from, right now," and everything below it fills in the rest for people who want more detail.
