In today’s digital world, trust is currency. But how do you verify trust when you’ve never met the person on the other end of the screen?
That question led us to build Verified — an AI-powered digital identity verification and compliance solution that helps individuals and businesses confirm identities, detect fraud, and stay KYC/AML compliant at scale.
🎯 Problem Definition
Digital onboarding and financial transactions are accelerating - but so is digital fraud. In our research, we identified 3 persistent pain points across fintechs, crypto platforms, and online marketplaces:
Manual identity checks slowed growth: Teams were spending hours verifying documents, often with errors or inconsistencies.
Rising fraud and spoofing attacks: Basic checks like selfies or uploaded IDs weren’t enough to catch deepfakes or forged documents.
Compliance chaos: Startups expanding globally struggled to stay KYC/AML compliant across jurisdictions.
We spoke with 15+ compliance officers, founders, and operations teams. Their ask: “Give us a fast, smart, scalable way to trust people online — without hiring 20 analysts.”
🧠 3. Approach / Thinking
We set out to design Verified as a modular, AI-first identity engine that could plug into any platform, handle high-volume verification, and adapt to global compliance requirements.
Our north stars:
Precision + Speed: Use AI to reduce verification from 24 hours to under 2 minutes.
Trust + Transparency: Let users see why they were verified or rejected.
Scalability: Make it easy for a 10-person startup or a global bank to integrate Verified in days, not months.
We started with four core modules:
Identity Verification
Fraud Detection
Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Screening
KYC Compliance Dashboard
🧪 4. Design + Iteration
We focused on human-centered compliance, designing for the user experience of both end users and compliance teams:
End-user flow: A 3-minute experience that guides users through document upload, facial scan, and real-time screening with clear microcopy, visual feedback, and privacy-first messaging.
AI-Driven Risk Engine: Behind the scenes, we used machine learning to compare document metadata, facial landmarks, behavioral patterns, and device signals for fraud detection.
Compliance Ops Dashboard: A command center for compliance officers, showing real-time verification status, flagged risks, and global AML coverage.
Iterations
Early users found our document scan UI too generic, we added adaptive scanning guidance based on document type and country.
Some small businesses struggled with onboarding, we created a no-code “Verified Link” option for instant use without dev support.
We introduced an API-first approach with React components to make integration easier for developers.
🧪 5. Outcome & Impact
Within 6 months of launch:
Verified handled 1.2 million+ identity checks across 10 countries.
Reduced average onboarding time from 36 hours to under 5 minutes.
Flagged and prevented over 5,000 fraud attempts, including deepfakes and synthetic identities.
Helped clients maintain 100% KYC/AML audit compliance during government inspections.
One CTO called it “the Stripe of digital identity — fast, clean, and globally ready.”
✍🏽 6. Reflection / What I Learned
Designing Verified showed me that compliance doesn’t have to feel like a penalty box. With the right design and tech, it can be an accelerator.
We had to strike a delicate balance between security and speed, transparency and automation, local laws and global standards. That meant working closely with legal experts, engineers, and users - not just designing screens but building trust.
It reinforced my belief that great design isn’t just about usability, it’s about mitigating risk while enabling growth.
🌍 7. Why It Matters
Verified is more than a product, it’s a trust layer for the digital economy. As identity fraud grows and regulations tighten, companies need tools that evolve with them.
Whether it’s helping a startup onboard users in Kenya or enabling a crypto exchange to stay compliant in the EU, Verified is shaping the future of how identity, safety, and compliance work in a decentralized, digital-first world.
And for me as a designer, it's been a reminder that designing for trust is one of the most important, and impactful thing we can do.
