5 Things to Do When You Need to Refocus
We all know what it’s like to lose focus. You know, lose sight of what you’re getting at in this life. We set goals, work towards them, but sometimes get off track and have a hard time getting back where we want to be.
I have definitely struggled with this on my creative side. It’s easy to get sidetracked with the busy in life and forget to re-center ourselves in line with our purpose and goals.
Here are five things that have helped me when I needed to find my “vibe” again:
1. Do nothing.
OK - This one might seem contradicting to this post, but hear me out. What better thing to do when you can’t seem to find your direction? When your body is in over-stimulation mode, sometimes it’s best to do exactly what yourmind is telling you to do:nothing.Just take some time to let yourself refocus by letting go of the stress and busy of the day andjust be still.
2. Find a local coffee shop or restaurant.
This is one of my favorite things to do to refocus myself and my creative vision. Sometimes it is just difficult to get things done at home. So why not take your work elsewhere? And if you’re not working, then simply find a local coffee shop or hole in the wall restaurant and order something, sit down at a table by yourself, write, read a book, or just people watch.Coffee shops are one of my favorite places on earth.I love to watch people come and go. Some in a hurry, some sad, some celebrating amazing things, but all people. Sometimes a visit to a local eatery or coffeehouse is just what I need to remind myself thatwe are all in this life thing together.
3. Sit in the silence.
If you’ve lost focus, youwon’t find purposebusying yourself withhollow obligationsandplaces to be.It might seem like it, but that will only burn you out even more. What’s helped me the most to refocus has been the moments where I just sat in the present. Sometimes this means sitting and writing about what’s going on, where I lost focus, where I am struggling, and sometimes it’s just sitting and doing nothing but listening to praise and worship music. We have become a culture that is afraid of what the silence will sound like, when really we need to learn to be its friend again.
4. Be honest with yourself.
When you’re not feeling it and you think you have lost focus,be honestwith yourself about that. You don’t have to trick the world into thinking you’ve got it figured out. Instead, be honest about hitting a roadblock.Honesty will do more for your soul than pretending you are heading in the right direction.Sometimes when something doesn’t feel right, whether it’s in a new business venture, friendship, or life endeavor, it’s best to behonestabout whether something is working or not. Hone in on your instincts.Sometimes the best thing to do is pause and regroup.
5. Get lost in Him.
At times, I think weneed to lose focusso that we canlearn to refocusagain in Him. In my life, this is a never-ending cycle. For one, I am human and it is my sinful nature to be tempted to fall away from Him and His teachings. And two, it’s this cycle that keeps mealive and on fire for Him. It’s The Word that gets me focused again. It’s hearing His words through song, scripture, and fellow believers. This is whatcarries me throughwhen I think I have lost sight. I’m not a perfect person and definitely not a perfect Christian and when I am feeling messy,I get lost in Him.Whether that’s through writing, worship music, reading The Word, or all three at the same time, I’ve found that there is nothing that can refocus me more than when I lose focus onALLother things and get lost in Christ.
Maybe you are feeling unfocused today and you’re not sure where to turn to re-center yourself. I would love to know what you think if you try some of these!
Praying forfocus, intentionality and blessingsin every corner of your life today.
