The sci-fi genre has been one of the most popular and beloved film genres throughout the industry, particularly in more modern times. In the '70s and '80s, some of the most influential sci-fi films were released such as Star Wars and Alien, with such films shaping the film industry into what it is today. Another film from Alien director Ridley Scott is the original Blade Runner, which at the time was a truly unique sci-fi film, and is considered today as one of the all-time best installments in the genre.
In 2017, the Blade Runner title returned to the big screen with Blade Runner 2049, helmed by Denis Villeneuve. Despite not doing as well at the box office as expected, earning $267.7 million worldwide, the neo-noir cyberpunk film has since gained a massive fan base due to its masterful direction, acting, and cinematography all coming together, creating a film that defines everything that makes the sci-fi genre so special. Despite not earning as much as others in the genre, here's why Blade Runner 2049 was the best film of 2017.
