ECLIPSE: Packaging Design

Eclipse: A Chocolate Box

University Brief

This brief required the design and manufacturing of a piece of packaging that made use of a finish. I had to additionally research the advertising regulations of the country in which the item would be marketed, and ensure that the various warnings, food tables, and grammages adhered to both these regulations and the chosen aesthetic. I chose to create a 'limited-edition' box for a fictitious Japanese chocolate company, 'Eclipse'. The design therefore makes use of traditional Japanese illustration styles, namely in the clouds and water.
As this box unfolds, it reveals the Filipino mythological tale of Bakunawa, the moon eater. She is said to be the cause of earthquakes, rain, eclipses, and wind, as in her original story, she becomes so endeared with the shimmering of the moon that she attempts to engulf it whole. It is said that there were originally seven moons, of which she ate six, which are represented on the interior chocolate boxes, while the exterior box shows a frozen moment as she attempts to eat the seventh. The interior three boxes align to make a single image, as does the exterior box with an inner film.

Printed Mockups

In line with the brief, we were also required to print the box ourselves in a limited-time run. The photos below represent the finished product.
