Morning Rhythms of Uttan: A Fishing Village Photostory

This photography project documents a morning in Uttan, a fishing village caught between routine and uncertainty.

At sunrise, fishermen prepare their boats and head toward the horizon, hoping for a catch large enough to justify the journey. But a prolonged scarcity of fish has disrupted the village’s usual rhythm. Boats return with little, markets that would normally be crowded with fresh catch remain sparse, and fish-drying grounds sit empty beneath the afternoon sun.

As fishing becomes increasingly unreliable, the community adapts. Some fishermen have turned to weaving nets, while others occupy themselves with painting decorative wooden pieces for boats, attending weddings, and continuing everyday routines. Vendors depend largely on frozen stock, though small signs of the village’s fishing culture remain visible in homes where fish is still dried in front yards.

Through these photographs, the project captures a community suspended between waiting and adapting: a village shaped by the sea, continuing its daily life while holding on to the possibility that the next boat might return with a fresh catch.
