Project Overview

As a naval architect and marine engineer, I worked in the design and development of the TCG Derya (A-1590), a state-of-the-art fast combat support auxiliary ship for the Turkish Naval Forces. This project, initiated in 2016 and completed in 2024, aimed to enhance Turkey's naval capabilities for extended operations in high seas and transoceanic waters.

Project Scope

The project involved designing and constructing a 194.8-meter long, 26,000-ton displacement vessel capable of simultaneously supplying multiple ships with fuel, water, provisions, spare parts, medical supplies, and ammunition. Key project components included:
Developing a hybrid propulsion system featuring gas turbines, diesel engines, and electric motors
Designing fuel and water storage systems with capacities of 10,000 tons and 800 tons respectively
Integrating advanced combat management systems and defensive armaments
Incorporating aviation facilities for helicopter operations

Technical Challenges and Solutions

One of the primary challenges was balancing the ship's replenishment capabilities with its combat support role. We addressed this by:
Implementing a sophisticated naval architecture design to accommodate both large cargo capacities and advanced military systems
Developing a hybrid propulsion system to achieve a maximum speed of 24 knots while maintaining efficiency for long-range operations (4,500 nautical miles)
Integrating cutting-edge electronic systems

Key Achievements

Successfully designed a vessel with over 30 days of endurance at sea
Incorporated state-of-the-art defense system
Designed aviation facilities capable of supporting three helicopters (one on deck, two in hangar)
Achieved a cargo capacity of 48 standard containers in addition to liquid cargo

Project Impact

The TCG Derya significantly enhances the Turkish Navy's operational capabilities, allowing for extended missions without relying on land-based support. This vessel plays a crucial role in Turkey's maritime strategy, enabling the navy to maintain a presence in strategic areas and conduct various operations, including intelligence gathering, search and rescue, and humanitarian missions.

Skills Demonstrated

This project showcases my ability to contribute to high-stakes, technologically advanced naval engineering projects that significantly impact national defense capabilities.
