eBay Onboarding Flow Design

The goal of this project was to design a smooth and intuitive onboarding flow that guides users from email verification to role selection and personalization. The focus was on creating clarity at every step—ensuring users can easily verify their accounts, choose their role as buyer or seller, and set preferences without friction. By combining clean UI states, clear error handling, and supportive feedback messages, the design aims to improve trust and provide a seamless start to the user journey.
When designing the onboarding flow, the goal was to reduce unnecessary steps and keep users focused. Instead of redirecting them to a separate page for login or sign up, the experience uses tabs within the same screen.
This way, switching between the two actions is instant and effortless. For new users, the sign up form is just a click away without breaking context. For returning users, logging in feels equally fast since they don’t need to leave the screen. This approach cuts down friction, keeps the flow consistent, and ensures that the user stays in control of their journey.
A 4-slide onboarding animation highlighting eBay’s main categories—Fashion, Electronics, Home & Garden, and Collectibles. Each slide combines imagery with an eBay brand color overlay, creating a vibrant and consistent introduction to the platform.
A smooth email verification experience: users enter the code sent to their inbox, and once verified, they seamlessly proceed to the next step.
The email verification flow guides users step by step. If a user enters the wrong code, an immediate ‘Invalid code’ warning appears, helping them correct mistakes without confusion. Users who haven’t received the email can easily resend the code via a dedicated button.
Once clicked, a toast notification confirms that the email has been sent, giving clear feedback and maintaining trust. This approach ensures the process feels smooth, intuitive, and reduces user frustration while keeping the flow secure and reliable.
After successfully verifying their email, users proceed through three intuitive onboarding steps: first, they select their role—buyer or seller; next, they specify their interests to personalize their experience; and finally, they add payment details for seamless transactions.
The desktop layout provides clear hierarchy, ample spacing, and immediate feedback at each step, making the flow smooth, guided, and frustration-free.
