[Feature Journalism] Serving Obama: How a Hong Kong Immigrant Cooked His Way to a Michelin Star in Singapore
Produced entirely as a solo, multitasking initiative in Singapore, this on-the-ground feature profile chronicles the life of Hong Kong immigrant and Michelin-starred chef Cheung Siu-kong. Managing the entire journalistic pipeline independently—from investigative reporting to professional videography and on-site photography—the campaign tracks his bold migration from Hong Kong to the Lion City in 1996 as a culinary pioneer for Lei Garden Restaurant.
The narrative honestly captures the early structural hardships of migration, from familial displacement to language barriers, culminating in his triumphant tenure as Executive Chef at Summer Pavilion in 2014, where he secured a Michelin star for eight consecutive years and famously counted former US President Barack Obama as his guest.
By weaving deep human-interest insights with the concrete reality of his 1,000-square-foot HDB flat purchased for HKD 2.38 million in 2016, this project showcases an all-rounded capability to direct, shoot, and draft high-impact cross-border media campaigns seamlessly from concept to completion.
