"An Excerpt from The Islamic Guide to Depression by Idris Slaik."
In collaboration with Goodly Word Books Publications, I worked on a heartfelt animated video based on The Islamic Guide to Depression by Idris Slaik. This project was very close to me, as it explored the sensitive topic of depression through the lens of Islamic teachings. Our goal was to create a gentle and relatable animation that could offer both comfort and guidance to those struggling with their mental health.
Animating a theme as delicate as depression was emotionally challenging. It was important to respect the seriousness of the topic while still making the visuals uplifting and hopeful. Finding the right balance between sadness and healing was a constant focus throughout the project.
My Role
For this project, I was responsible for every creative and technical aspect, including:
Character Design: Creating a character that could visually express deep emotions while remaining relatable.
Composition and Scene Design: Structuring each scene thoughtfully to support the emotional tone of the message.
Expression Development: Designing subtle facial expressions to capture different stages of emotional struggle and hope.
Rigging and Movement: Building a rig that allowed for smooth, expressive animation to bring the character’s journey to life.
Full Animation: Animating the entire video to weave together the story and the message.
Outcome
The final animation captured a soft, emotional tone that resonated with the spirit of the guidebook. It was designed not just to depict struggle, but also to offer a message of hope, faith, and inner strength. This project allowed me to grow both artistically and personally, and it remains one of the works I’m most proud of.
