In this project case study, I will be sharing my experience designing the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for an app that maps and books charging stations for electric cars. The app’s primary goal was to make it easier for electric vehicle (EV) owners to find and reserve charging stations during their journeys.

The app features an innovative route-planning tool that allows users to create trips with one or more charging stops. It automatically calculates the required battery charge for the journey and reserves the necessary charging points along the route, offering a seamless and worry-free experience for electric car users.

The design process for the EV charging station app involved several stages. First, I conducted research on EV owners’ pain points, focusing on the difficulties they face when planning long trips and finding available charging stations. This research helped shape the core functionality and user experience of the app.

Based on these insights, I developed user personas and created wireframes to map out the app’s key features, including the mapping tool and automated reservation system. From there, I built a high-fidelity prototype and conducted usability testing to refine the design. The route-planning feature, which estimates the required battery charge and automatically reserves charging points, was a focal point of the design process.

Throughout the project, I worked closely with the app development team and stakeholders in the EV industry. This ensured that the app’s functionality aligned with the technical requirements and that it was easy to integrate with existing charging networks.

The MVP of the app was a user-friendly solution that simplified the journey-planning process for electric vehicle owners. Users could effortlessly create routes, see available charging stations, and have the app automatically reserve charging stops along the way.

The app’s innovative route-planning and booking feature enhanced convenience for EV drivers, reducing range anxiety and improving the overall travel experience. It successfully met the goals for the MVP and laid the foundation for future iterations with additional features.
