Fancard is a fan engagement platform for live events: sports clubs and event organizers run campaigns that turn fan moments into collectable memories and data. I was one of the engineers on it.
Live is different
A normal app gets its traffic over a day. A live event gets it in the ninety seconds after the whistle. Everyone opens the app at the same moment, for the same thing, and if a tap does not land in a second, it is gone. The stands do not retry.
So the interesting engineering is in the boring layer underneath the features. Keep the hot path tiny. Cache what everyone sees. Queue what everyone sends. And test at kick-off scale, not on a Tuesday afternoon.
