Overview

Safe hostel is an app that would help university students get hostels without leaving the comfort of their homes. This app would help them get one of the best s

Target Market

Male and Female aged 17 to 45. IOS and Android user. Students.

Problem

1. Students looking for hostels usually get scammed while looking for rooms, and they end up wasting money hence making their first experience in campus miserable. 2. Some of them spend a lot of transport money just to find the best hostels next to their universities. 3. Once they’ve gotten a hostel, some students go through a lot of hardships such as; insecurities leading to theft, lack of hospitality in hostels and more. 4. Some students get hostels but end up finding the distance quite far from their schools and this leads to high costs of living. 5. Students end up using their pocket up due to the high costs of living.

Strategy

Safe hostel would provide ratings for each hostel and students would know which hostel is best for them. Students would also be able to see the distance from their hostel to the campus, and this would help them know how much time it would take them. Utility section would be added to the app whereby students can see what service are provided at the hostel. This would also help them select some of the best hostel. Room section will be added whereby students can see and select the room they’re interested in. This would help them select some of the best ones. A wallet section will be added to the app where students can save monet for the next semester, and also save their pocket money.

Goals

To ensure safe booking of the hostel for each and every student despite of their backgrounds and differences. To make sure every student gets to know their roommates without stepping a foot outside the comfort of their homes.

Key Features

Explore - Where one can explore different types of hostels around their universities. Wallet - One can deposit, save and withdraw their money. Hostel - They can view their current hostel, and favorite ones. Notifications - Students can view updates from hostels using this feature.

Objectives

To design a section that would help students to easily know their room numbers and roommates. This would be of use because they’d get comfortable before even stepping a foot in their rooms. The wallet section was designed to make it easy for students to save their money, and also save for hostel rooms in advance. The notification section was designed in order to make it easy for the hostel to update students with any information instead of using a notice board as in the old days.

Project learnings

Overall, This project brought on unique challenges that in the end really helped me grow as a designer. New to creating an app from scratch, I learned quickly that I needed to be confident in the decisions I was making, even if it meant taking more time to analyze and dig deeper. What would I change? To my point of view, this app would change the lives of a lot of students, because the hustle of hostel hunting would be eased. The stress that was accompanied by the hurdle of being on the top of the class would be relieved. Perhaps it could lead a lot of students to success.
Since the app was starting from scratch, a strong foundation of user & market research was needed to define direction and priorities for the app. To set the framework for my research process and establish context, I considered the following questions:
Which stage is the product in? Product discovery
Do I want to discover how people feel, or how they behave? For this stage, I’d love to uncover how they feel, then later in the usability testing, I’d uncover how they behave.
Based on these questions, I decided on a mix of goals and UX research methods that would best fit this project’s situation.

Goals

Learn how students usually get to book for hostels, and how they find the best ones. Learn more about the costs of booking a hostel, and how long it takes for each student to get one. Get to understand what other apps and websites offer. More especially, to understand their weaknesses and make it our strength. Understanding some of the problems that students usually face whenever booking a hostel.

Methodologies

Secondary
Competitive Analysis: Possibly analyzing some of the existing apps and also the trendy ways that students use to book for hostels. Community Conversations: Monitoring students through social media, commnunities, campus halls and hostels, then conduct user interviews and try to understand their painponts
Primary
User Interviews: Obtain in-depth stories of students to highlight patterns, pain points, and priorities when booking.
