Designing for AI: Mothering Together’s Evolution

Background: While the core challenge of postpartum support remained central to the project, integrating AI capabilities introduced new complexities and opportunities. The key challenge evolved to include delivering personalized, evidence-based information at scale while maintaining the human-centered aspect of maternal care. The solution leverages AI to enhance rather than replace human connection, using technology to bridge gaps in postpartum care access.
Design Considerations & Approach:
1. Human-Centered AI Integration
a. Created Elle AI chatbot with a warm, empathetic personality aligned with brand values b. Designed conversation flows that recognize emotional context in user queries c. Implemented clear indicators of AI-generated content versus expert-verified resources d. Maintained transparency about AI capabilities and limitations
2. Content & Safety Architecture
a. Developed comprehensive content verification system for AI responses b. Created fallback pathways for queries requiring human expertise c. Built systematic content review process for ongoing AI training d. Implemented ethical guidelines for handling sensitive maternal health topics
3. User Experience & Interface Design
a. Designed intuitive chat interface that clearly differentiates AI from human interactions b. Created progressive disclosure of AI features to prevent overwhelming new users c.
