SCANDALS AND ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION:THE NPP AHEAD THE 2024 GENERAL ELECTIONS
The New Patriotic Party in its inception was a breath of fresh air for the citizens of Ghana who had just escaped a tumultuous period of time due to the consequences of numerous military coups. On the parties website it reads;
“The Party’s policy is to liberate the energies of the people for the growth of a property-owning democracy in this land, with right to life, freedom and justice, as the principles to which the Government and laws of the land should be dedicated in order specifically to enrich life, property and liberty of each and every citizen.
We aim to bring together like-minded citizens of the country so that they may strive for Freedom and Justice by the appreciation and protection of human rights and the rule of Law through the practice of true democracy.”
…Dr. J.B Danquah
The NPP had their first shot at the presidency with the victory of John Agyekum Kuffour who was president of the Republic of Ghana from 7th January 2001 to 7th January 2009. After said victory,it would be a savage battle between the party and the NDC before the presidency would return to the camp of the New Patriotic Party in the year 2017.
What was termed as the new dawn for Ghanaians by many after years of hardship, injustice and pure chaos quickly turned into another nightmare. Things began to quickly spiral upon the lifting of the Covid-19 bans. The exchange rate of the dollar and cedis negatively affected the economy of Ghana. A rise in the price of petroleum on Monday was soon followed by a hike in the price of rice on Wednesday. This cycle became rampant and soon most Ghanaians could not afford basic amenities such as quality education,food,sanitary products just to mention a few. Over the years the blatant incompetence of the president and his ministers has enraged the youth which has led to the formation of an organisation called “Fix The Country” and a groundbreaking protest dubbed “OccupyJulorbiHouse” which occurred over a period of three days. This new movement brought about scandalous and incriminating claims of ministers and people in power syphoning and misappropriating public funds. Talks of impeachment or resignation of the president and most of his ministers have been on the lips of many Ghanaians causing major rupture within the New Patriotic Party.
During the process of choosing a new party flag bearer some contenders claimed to have been intimidated by major party members and their supporters brutally mistreated. On 25th September 2023 Alan John Kyeremateng, a long term party member announced his resignation from the NPP deciding to contest for the presidency independently this further accelerating the challenges faced by the party. These and many others are the turmoil the party has been faced with yet in recent times it has been announced that on 4th November 2023 the NPP primaries will formally be held in 276 constituencies across the country. City NewsRoom reported;
“The Electoral Commission (EC) shall supervise the conduct of the elections and shall have the full responsibility of ensuring a transparent, free and fair election. No persons, whether party officials or otherwise whatsoever shall act in contravention to the EC and these guidelines.”
It is therefore the hope of some Ghanaians and party members that this new development may bring back some hope in the competence of the party and hopefully lead them to victory in the 2024 general elections.
