The Mission

Earth Almanac is a collaborative project built on a simple belief: that the Earth is a living relative. In a world that the editors describe as "rushing toward abstraction, extraction, and disconnection," the project serves as a space to slow down. It is a home for long-form writing that explores the kinship we share with the planet—reminding us that our lives are braided into something older and wider than ourselves.

The Challenge: Countering Abstraction

The core design challenge was philosophical as much as it was visual. How do you design a digital interface that fights against the "abstraction" of the modern web?
Standard web design often pushes for speed, gamification, and endless engagement. For Earth Almanac, we needed the opposite. We needed a platform that felt grounded and human—a space that invites readers to "belong wisely" rather than just consume content.
My Role & The Solution
As the lead designer and developer, my goal was to translate this reverence for the Earth into a functional digital system. I focused on creating a "quiet" interface where the design supports reflection rather than distraction.
Visual Identity: The aesthetic is stripped back and breathable, allowing the typography and the ecological narratives to hold the weight. It avoids digital clutter to mirror the project's goal of disconnection from the noise.
The Reading Experience: I built the site to prioritize legibility and pacing. The layout treats the screen less like a feed and more like a page in a book, offering a calm environment for complex stories about nature's "unfathomable ways of existence."
Technical Architecture: I maintain the full editorial system, ensuring that the backend is as sustainable and manageable as the frontend is clean.
The Outcome
Earth Almanac is now a live archive of wisdom and wonder. It stands as a testament to the idea that digital tools can be used to reconnect us to the physical world, provided they are designed with intention and care.
