About

Encontros da Imagem is one of the most established international photography festivals in Portugal. Founded in 1987, the festival has consistently promoted contemporary photography and visual culture, bringing together emerging and renowned artists from around the world through exhibitions, talks, and public programs. In 2017, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, I developed a proposed visual and graphic approach for the festival, rethinking its identity and communication system as a conceptual exercise to mark this milestone. The proposal was not implemented.

Concept

This proposed identity for Encontros da Imagem is rooted in the core principle of photography: the interplay between light and shadow, used as both a conceptual foundation and a visual language. The logo is built from the initials E and I, where the E (Encontros), contained within a circle, refers to the idea of a point and a meeting place, while the I (Imagem), framed by a rectangle, evokes the format of photography, video, projection, and installation. The result is a restrained, high-contrast, and flexible graphic system designed to reinforce the festival’s contemporary and image-driven nature.

This identity system explores light and shadow as a core photographic principle, translating it into a bold, minimal, and high-contrast graphic system.
