EcoRise is a sustainability-focused mobile app designed to help people reduce their everyday plastic consumption. My job was to design the app from zero to one — turning an important environmental goal into something simple, motivating, and actually enjoyable to use.
Going green shouldn’t feel like homework
Most people know plastic is a problem. The harder part is changing everyday habits.
The challenge with EcoRise wasn’t just showing users how much plastic they consume. It was making sustainable choices feel easy, achievable, and rewarding.
Instead of overwhelming users with information, I focused on creating a friendly experience built around small actions: complete challenges, build better habits, track progress, and celebrate the wins along the way.
The goal was simple — make sustainability feel less like a responsibility and more like a journey.
I started by mapping out the core user journey and identifying the moments that could help users stay motivated.
The main experience revolved around four things: daily challenges, habit-building, progress tracking, and rewards.
I created wireframes first to quickly validate the structure and make sure the key actions were easy to understand. This helped establish a simple flow before moving into the visual design.
Once the flow felt right, I focused on creating a UI that felt fresh, positive, and approachable. Clear progress indicators helped users understand their impact, while challenges and achievement badges added a sense of momentum.
I also designed different interaction and feedback states — from successful challenge completion and achievement moments to empty and error states — so the experience felt complete beyond the main screens.
Making progress feel rewarding
One of the key UX decisions was to make progress visible.
Rather than simply telling users to “use less plastic,” EcoRise gives them tangible goals to work toward. Completing challenges contributes to their progress, unlocks achievements, and helps build a sense of accomplishment.
The reward system was designed to encourage small, consistent actions instead of demanding a complete lifestyle change overnight.
Because sustainable habits are built over time, the experience needed to keep giving users a reason to come back.
A system built to grow
Alongside the core screens, I created a simple and reusable design system covering components, buttons, cards, progress indicators, badges, typography, colors, and interaction states.
This helped keep the experience consistent across the app while making future features easier to design and develop.
Conclusion
EcoRise turned a big environmental problem into a series of small, achievable actions.
The final concept brings together habit building, challenges, progress tracking, and rewards in one friendly experience — helping users understand their impact while giving them a reason to keep going.
The focus throughout the project was simple: make sustainable choices easier, make progress visible, and make every small win feel worth celebrating.
