McDonald’s App Redesign – Simplifying Ordering & Enhancing UX

The primary objective of this project was to redesign the McDonald’s mobile app to create a more seamless, intuitive, and personalised user experience. The challenge was to simplify the ordering process, improve visual hierarchy, and introduce features that enhance user convenience, all while maintaining brand consistency. The goal was to make the app faster, smarter, and easier to use for both tech-savvy and casual customers.

Scope

The redesign focused on three key areas: Homepage: Creating a clean and structured layout with clear categorisation for easier navigation. Ordering Flow: Introducing a guided, chatbot-assisted ordering process to simplify decision-making. Personalisation: Allowing users to view previous orders, add favourites, and customise filters for a more tailored experience.

Approach

The design process began with user research and heuristic evaluation of the existing McDonald’s app to identify major usability issues such as cluttered layouts, overwhelming visuals, and limited personalisation.
Based on insights from user testing and feedback, the redesigned app adopted a modular design system with improved visual balance, better contrast, and simplified navigation. A conversational chatbot (“McBot”) was introduced to help users place orders quickly, catering to both first-time users and frequent customers. The colour palette and typography were refined to enhance brand recognition while maintaining the iconic McDonald’s visual identity.
To further enhance flexibility, users were given the option to easily switch between Drive-through, Dine-in, Take-away, and Delivery modes, enabling them to adjust their order preferences as needed.

Results

The redesigned interface resulted in smoother task completion, higher user satisfaction, and improved clarity in content organisation. Test users reported faster order placement and a stronger sense of control when interacting with the app. The introduction of personalisation and a more engaging homepage layout contributed to an enhanced digital experience that reflects McDonald’s commitment to convenience, accessibility, and joyful service.
