At Big Immersive, I worked on THE VFLECT, an avatar and guide for the Virtua Metaverse. In a two-week sprint, I collaborated with team leads to design a customizable, friendly robot character. The brief required a design that felt approachable and trustworthy, which led me to draw inspiration from caterpillars and honeybees. After sketching numerous iterations, we settled on a simple human torso design that became the team’s favorite.
A key challenge was creating a character customizable enough for unique iterations while maintaining a cohesive identity. I also had to design joints for easy attachment and detachment in 3D models, ensuring functionality without losing personality. With no facial features, we used telepathy to convey emotion, adding a unique twist.
The design process taught me the importance of balancing flexibility and functionality. The simplicity of the character’s anatomy allowed for diverse customizations, leading to various characters with distinct personalities and backstories. This project also deepened my understanding of character design in immersive virtual environments.
