Background: Field Engineers are crucial in fixing and repairing equipment at cell sites. Their job requires efficient scheduling and organization to ensure timely maintenance and repairs. However, the existing process was challenging due to information clutter and the need to prioritize tasks effectively.
Challenge: The most significant challenge faced by Field Engineers was sorting through a myriad of information and tasks to identify urgent repairs and maintenance activities. Additionally, since everything appeared to be a priority, it was difficult to allocate time efficiently.
An additional hurdle involved integrating three distinct pieces of information within the event card. These components encompassed:
Event Priority
Event Type
Event Location
Furthermore, considering the substantial volume of events, the design should avoid overwhelming users cognitively.
Solution: Sorting information and task prioritization were problematic for Field Engineers. To resolve this, a user-focused calendar app was developed, utilizing the Verizon Design System (Canvas) for a consistent and cohesive design approach.
Design Approach:
Verizon Design System (Canvas) Integration: The calendar app was entirely designed using the Verizon Design System, ensuring a uniform user experience across Verizon's suite of tools.
Simplified Visuals: The calendar interface was designed with a clean and intuitive layout. Each task was represented with clear icons and color codes, allowing engineers to identify the nature of the task quickly.
Smart Filters: Filters were implemented to categorize tasks based on urgency, equipment type, and location. This enabled engineers to focus on high-priority tasks without being overwhelmed by irrelevant information.
Task Details: Tapping on a task revealed comprehensive details, including site information, required equipment, and past maintenance history. This ensured that engineers had all the necessary information at their fingertips.
Outcome: The new calendar application significantly improved the efficiency and effectiveness of Field Engineers:
Unified Experience: Leveraging the Verizon Design System led to a coherent experience for engineers, aligning with the broader Verizon ecosystem.
Enhanced Prioritization: Engineers could now focus on tasks requiring immediate attention, resulting in faster repairs and reduced downtime.
Reduced Information Overload: The clutter of irrelevant information was eliminated, allowing engineers to access the tasks relevant to their roles quickly.
Improved Time Management: The ability to quickly mark tasks as completed or reschedule them streamlined task management, freeing up more time for critical repairs.
Conclusion: The redesigned calendar application empowered Field Engineers to efficiently manage their tasks, prioritize effectively, and ensure timely repairs and maintenance. By focusing on user needs and addressing pain points, the solution not only improved task management but also contributed to the overall efficiency of cell site maintenance operations.
