Bringing Medieval Fantasy to Life with Sound Design

Sound design plays a crucial role in animation, setting the tone and bringing the visuals to life. In our latest personal project, a self-directed medieval fantasy animation by Axel Kinear, we focused on crafting an immersive soundscape that complements the hand-drawn, childlike aesthetic while enhancing the intensity of the action.

The Vision for the Animation

Axel Kinear provided a clear brief for the sound design, outlining the desired mood and references to guide the creative process. When discussing the project, he shared,
"I love the musicality and sound choices of the Rugrats theme to convey that sort of naive childlike mood and tone. This City Living animation I did my own sound design for and was happy with the result, I like the quirky and off-kilter tone of this one. For this Medieval Fantasy animation, the sound could be a little bit more intense and edgy, but I'd like to keep things playful."
The goal was to blend playfulness with intensity, ensuring the medieval fantasy world felt immersive yet lighthearted. With these references in mind, the sound design was crafted to capture the childlike fantasy of the animation while incorporating dynamic, cinematic elements for a more immersive experience.

Our Approach to Sound Design

To achieve this, we carefully considered Axel’s direction and worked to balance the childlike playfulness with the intensity of a medieval fantasy setting. His appreciation for quirky and off-kilter sound choices guided our approach in maintaining a whimsical yet immersive atmosphere. We incorporated cinematic influences like The Winds of Winter and Mhysa from Game of Thrones to add emotional weight and grandeur, ensuring that the animation had a compelling and expressive soundscape.

Crafting the Soundscape

Ambience & Atmosphere
We designed a rich, layered background of chirping birds, rustling leaves, and distant battle sounds to establish a living, breathing medieval world.
The village sequence includes subtle marketplace chatter, wooden carts creaking, and blacksmiths hammering, giving depth to the setting.
Action & Intensity
As the camera moves through the castle siege, we intensified the sound design with clashing swords, crumbling walls, and fiery explosions.
The motion of the camera was matched with whooshes, dynamic pans, and reverb effects to enhance the sense of speed and urgency.
The Dragon’s Impact
The grand finale features a ferocious dragon whose roar reverberates through the scene.
To create a unique and powerful dragon growl, we layered real animal sounds (tigers, elephants, and alligators) with deep, guttural synth effects.
The final moment—where the dragon swallows the camera—was designed with a mix of muffled low-end rumbles, echoes, and a dramatic crescendo, creating an unforgettable ending.

Final Thoughts

The result is a dynamic, immersive, and expressive soundscape that breathes life into the animation while maintaining its playful charm. By balancing intensity and whimsy, we successfully complemented the hand-drawn aesthetic with a soundtrack that captures both the magic and the chaos of medieval fantasy.
A special thanks to Axel Kinear for trusting us with this animation and providing such insightful direction. The sound design was crafted by Davies Aguirre, founder of Penrose Audio, bringing a unique blend of creativity and technical expertise to this medieval fantasy world.
