Building a Global Connection: Luxottica’s Employee Engagement Platform

In a company as vast and globally influential as Luxottica, where over 80,000 employees are spread across 40 major eyewear brands, maintaining a cohesive corporate culture is a challenge. When the company approached us to help bridge the gap between their diverse workforce, we knew this wouldn’t be an ordinary project. We aimed to transform how their employees connected, communicated, and engaged, and that meant building an innovative, multilingual intranet platform—a digital hub that felt like home to every member of the Luxottica family.
A Vision Two Years in the Making
Our team spent nearly two years conceptualizing, designing, developing, and testing the employee engagement platform that would revolutionize how Luxottica’s team members interacted. The goal was clear: create an intranet that wouldn’t just serve as a work tool but a place for employees to share their lives, interests, and stories in an intuitive, engaging format. The platform, inspired by the aesthetics of Pinterest, encouraged users to post and interact with visual content, sparking creativity and connection.
Multilingual Inclusivity: Breaking Language Barriers
Given Luxottica’s extensive reach, with employees operating across various continents, we needed to build a platform that supported over five different languages. Instead of relying on manual translations or the burden of toggling options, we created a system where text content was automatically translated into the user’s preferred language. This seamless integration ensured that employees could engage with content without friction, regardless of their location or native tongue. The result was an inclusive and truly global communication network.
Bringing Luxottica’s Brands and Teams Closer
EssilorLuxottica, the parent company, owns a portfolio of over 150 eyewear brands, with a significant market share of 36% in Europe and 47% in North America. To reflect this diverse and dynamic environment, the platform was designed to bring together employees from Luxottica’s house brands like Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, and Vogue Eyewear, as well as their licensed brands, including luxury names like Chanel, Prada, Versace, and Giorgio Armani. It also included those working within their retail operations such as LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Pearle Vision, and Target Optical.
The intranet platform enabled employees from various brands and retail sectors—spanning everything from high-end luxury eyewear to everyday optical needs—to interact and get to know each other better. Employees were encouraged to share aspects of their professional and personal lives, contributing to a richer, more connected company culture.
Rewarding Engagement, Inspiring Community
To drive user participation and maintain engagement, we built a reward system that incentivized employees to share and interact with content. Employees earned points and badges for their posts, whether it was about their work achievements, a glimpse into their hobbies, or showcasing the unique local flavors from their regions. These elements not only sparked engagement but also celebrated the diverse personalities within the company.
The Result: A Connected Global Family
Today, Luxottica’s employee engagement platform isn’t just an intranet; it’s the beating heart of the organization. It unites employees from different time zones, languages, and brands, turning a global workforce into a connected, vibrant community. Employees no longer feel like strangers, but rather like vital parts of a shared vision, collaborating and engaging as one global family.
For a company that controls nearly half the eyewear market in North America and over a third in Europe, this platform is more than a tool—it’s a game-changer. It exemplifies how technology, when tailored to the unique needs of a brand, can build not just business efficiency but human connection, turning a vast corporation into a close-knit community.
